OverRuled: "God Damn it, you've got to be kind." Kurt Vonnegut and Robbie Weinstein are breaking all the rules.
What is the most memorable moment from your 18th year?
Discovering - in our dorm’s common room - that the woman who would become my first college girlfriend liked me back. The relationship went to hell in my 19th year but that 3:00 am discovery was memorable .
When did you feel like you became an adult?
Never. I have never felt like I became an adult. I mostly feel like a 17 year-old who does adult things, like parent; and work on my relationships; and pursue creative stuff; and earn/manage money. But there has never been a point in my %!-something years where I’ve looked at myself and thought, “That right there is an Adult.” Do people do this?
What is most important rule you follow?
I’ll let Kurt Vonnegut have this one:
“Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
What is the worst rule you’ve broken?
In college I upended a Coca-Cola vending machine onto a clothed mannequin for a theater design project. The ideas was to make it look as though the machine had fallen on someone who was wrestling with it to retrieve a lost dollar.
Campus facilities didn’t think much of this vision and I was made to remove debris from an entire section of the school’s football stadium. They said I had “Endangered School Property” but I had worked with seven people to make sure the machine was never in danger. The theater department didn’t stand up to them.
Theirs was a sucky and made-up non-rule.
What rule would you love to break, but haven’t?
It’s a tie:
- I’m a librarian and there are some days I would just love to unload on our more difficult patrons.
- I would love to line-item veto my taxes to withhold all the money that promotes war, death and dehumanization and launder it to governmental departments and organizations that help people.
Who’s the biggest rule-breaker you know?
Our President is the only one who comes to mind.
What rule do you wish more people would follow?
I wish people riding escalators would stand on the right side and move on the left.
